The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has urged Ghanaians to discourage relatives and friends from collecting petroleum products from overturned fuel tankers, warning that the practice puts lives at risk.

He made the appeal during the 2026 NPA Consumer Week celebration at Kasoa, on Thursday, November 5 where he called on the public to prioritise safety whenever tanker accidents occur.

Mr Tameklo stressed that people must resist invitations to collect spilled fuel, noting that decisions taken at accident scenes could endanger not only those directly involved but also their families and communities.

He urged residents to stay away from such scenes and allow the appropriate authorities to manage the situation.

The NPA Boss also called on community leaders, transport operators and families to help spread awareness about the dangers of collecting fuel from accident sites.

He said public education and collective responsibility were essential to preventing avoidable tragedies, emphasising that protecting lives could begin with persuading others to stay away from spilled petroleum products.

Mr Tameklo’s appeal gives public safety a personal meaning: protecting a neighbour can begin with persuading them to stay back.
