Ghana and Belarus have signed three major Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at deepening economic cooperation, boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening trade relations between the two countries.

The agreements were signed during President John Dramani Mahama’s official visit to Belarus, where he held high-level discussions with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in the capital, Minsk.

The three agreements cover the establishment of a Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, enhanced collaboration between the chambers of commerce of Ghana and Belarus, and expanded cooperation in the agricultural sector.

The move is expected to provide a formal framework for increased bilateral engagement and open new avenues for investment, technology transfer and private sector collaboration.

President Mahama described the agreements as a practical roadmap for transforming the relationship between the two countries from diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic benefits.

According to him, the Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation will serve as a strategic platform for identifying investment opportunities, addressing trade barriers and promoting mutually beneficial partnerships between Ghanaian and Belarusian businesses.

The second agreement, focusing on cooperation between the chambers of commerce of both countries, is expected to strengthen business-to-business engagements and facilitate the exchange of market information, expertise and investment opportunities.

Agriculture emerged as a central pillar of the discussions, with both nations agreeing to intensify cooperation in agricultural mechanisation, technology transfer, skills development and food production.

President Mahama noted that Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda requires strong partnerships and modern technology to improve productivity and ensure food security.

He said Belarus possesses considerable expertise in agricultural machinery manufacturing and mechanised farming systems, which could significantly support Ghana’s efforts to modernise its agricultural sector.

The agreements were signed on behalf of Ghana by Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku, and Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia and Belarus, Dr Jehu Appiah.

Government officials believe the new agreements could also pave the way for future cooperation in other strategic sectors including manufacturing, renewable energy, mining support services, technical education and industrial development.

The agreements are expected to take effect following the completion of the necessary implementation arrangements by both governments.
