Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged contractors working on the La General Hospital project to accelerate construction to meet the facility’s scheduled commissioning in January 2028.

“We can speed up so that we can beat the deadline,” he said during an inspection of the project, acknowledging progress while stressing the need to maintain the pace of work.

The Minister said the hospital would serve a large population and called for efforts to ensure it was completed on schedule.

He dismissed payment delays as a reason for slow progress, saying the government had been paying contractors on time. He added that the latest interim payment certificate had been submitted and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance.

Mr Akandoh also called for a review of the proposed capacity of the hospital’s emergency department to ensure it could meet demand and help address challenges with emergency bed availability.

The €50 million project includes the provision and installation of medical equipment.

The Minister pledged to continue monitoring construction until the hospital is completed and operational.
