Cenpower Generation Ltd says it removed 600 tonnes of waste from Sega Beach during the fourth edition of its annual KIPP Clean Project, highlighting the scale of shoreline pollution.

The exercise brought together employees, Kpone residents, the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, and waste management partners to clean the beach in the Tema Industrial enclave.

Cenpower, which owns the Kpone Independent Power Plant (KIPP), launched the project in September 2023 to tackle coastal pollution, protect marine ecosystems and encourage responsible waste disposal.

This year’s exercise involved Cenpower Operations (Cenops) and Excelior Solution Services, which supported shoreline cleaning, waste collection, sorting and safe disposal.

Cenpower’s Chief Executive, Theophilus Sackey, said protecting the environment required collective action beyond individual businesses' operations.

He warned that waste dumped into the ocean could wash back onto beaches, creating recurring pollution problems for coastal communities. He called for clean-up exercises to be supported by responsible disposal practices and sustained public participation.

The Director of Environmental Services at the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Freeman George, commended Cenpower for maintaining the initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, he urged businesses, institutions, and residents to help keep the municipality clean. He stressed that lasting improvements would depend on changes in everyday waste disposal habits.

He said environmental cleanliness should be a daily responsibility rather than an activity reserved for organised clean-up exercises.

Community members welcomed the initiative and called for continued collaboration to prevent waste from accumulating along the shoreline.

Cenops Plant Manager Darlington Ahuble said employee participation helped reinforce environmental awareness and responsible practices.

He explained that environmental compliance and cleanliness formed part of the company’s operational responsibilities. He urged employees, partners and neighbouring communities to sustain those efforts beyond the annual exercise.

Cenpower’s Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Elizabeth Akin-Taylor, also called for greater community involvement in coastal protection.

She said local participation could strengthen ownership of environmental initiatives and encourage residents to prevent littering.

According to her, the project’s value extended beyond the volume of waste collected. It also offered an opportunity to promote responsible environmental practices and strengthen cooperation among stakeholders.

The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on conserving oceans, seas and marine resources.
