Between 8,000 and 10,000 Ghanaian students are currently enrolled in higher education institutions across Europe, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed on Wednesday, November 4, while appealing for easier student visa processing.

Speaking at the maiden Study in Europe Fair at the University of Ghana, Legon, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said Ghanaian students are pursuing degrees across continental Europe, the Nordic region and the United Kingdom.

"From engineering and green technologies in Germany and France, to public policy, medicine, and social sciences across the UK, Italy, Hungary, and the Nordic nations, our young people are asserting their academic brilliance on the continental stage," Iddrisu said.

He noted that studying abroad equips young Ghanaians with technical competencies, intercultural fluency and international research networks that feed back into Ghana's national development.

Appeal for easier student visas and joint degrees

Addressing European diplomats and university representatives at the fair, Iddrisu appealed to EU member states to adopt a more generous and student-friendly approach when processing visa applications for Ghanaian admits.

He also outlined the government's push to expand transnational education through joint and double-degree partnerships between Ghanaian and European universities.

Under that model, students would complete one or two semesters locally at institutions such as the University of Ghana before finishing their coursework at partner campuses in Europe and returning home.

500 Ghanaians a year on Erasmus+ scholarships

EU Ambassador to Ghana Rune Skinnebach said the Legon fair was designed to give prospective students direct answers from embassy officials and universities on admission requirements, scholarships and visa procedures.

Skinnebach disclosed that about 500 Ghanaians receive scholarships and academic mobility grants each year under Erasmus+, which has funded more than 42,000 African students over a four-year period.

The one-day fair featured a dedicated Erasmus+ desk, a CV clinic, application workshops and youth networking sessions with European university delegates.
