Police Deny Reports of Escape by Suspects in Murder of Sammy Gyamfi’s Father-in-Law

The Western Central Regional Police Command has dismissed as false reports circulating in sections of the media claiming that three suspects standing trial in the murder of Mr Andrews Amankwah, father-in-law of National Communications Officer of the NDC, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, had escaped from lawful custody.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command described the publication as “entirely false, misleading and should be disregarded by the general public.”

According to the police, the accused persons — Kojo Amponsah, also known as Kamakazie; Emmanuel Appiah, alias Taller; and Tanko Bashiru, alias TK — were arraigned before court and remanded into prison custody at the Tarkwa Local Prison. They are expected to reappear before the court on May 7, 2026.

The Command explained that officers from the Regional Headquarters visited the Tarkwa Local Prison on April 27 and confirmed that all three suspects remained in custody.
The suspects were arrested on February 22 and 26, 2026, through intelligence-led operations carried out in Kumasi. Police said the trio had been picked up from separate hideouts in connection with the murder of Mr Amankwah at Owhim Tigo Junction in Kumasi, as well as a series of suspected car theft cases, including incidents reported in Tarkwa.

The police further warned individuals who deliberately create and spread false information capable of causing fear, panic or undermining public confidence that they risk arrest and prosecution under Ghanaian law.
The statement was signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Beatrice Turkson, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Western Central Regional Police Command.
