World Cup 2026: Panama coach Thomas Christiansen wary of Ghana but confident ahead of opener

Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has expressed confidence in his team's chances against Ghana while acknowledging the challenge that awaits them in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Central Americans arrived in Toronto on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's Group L clash at Toronto Stadium after completing their final training session at their Nottawasaga base camp.

Speaking at the official pre-match press conference, Christiansen praised the Black Stars' pedigree on the global stage but insisted his side is ready to make a strong start to their campaign.

"We have a lot of respect for Ghana," Christiansen said. "They are a team with experience in World Cups. They have a new coach who hasn't been in charge for very long, but that World Cup experience he possesses can help him convey important information to his players."

Despite his admiration for Ghana, the Danish-Spanish tactician believes Panama have what it takes to compete and potentially secure a positive result.

"The United States, Mexico and Canada have responded well. We also want to make our mark," he said.

"We know it will be a difficult match, but the team is in great shape, full of enthusiasm and confident that we can win."

Christiansen also highlighted the growing support his team has received from Panamanian fans in Canada, with hundreds turning up to welcome the squad upon their arrival in Toronto.

"We extend our special thanks to all the fans who support their national team, both in Panama and abroad," he added.

"It has taken a significant investment of time and money to be here. Seeing the stadium filled with Panamanians tomorrow fills us with pride and will be a vital support throughout the match."

Panama are making only their second appearance at the FIFA World Cup and will be hoping to begin their campaign with a memorable result against four-time African representatives Ghana.
