Three suspects have been handed over to the police after youths attacked traditional leaders and local officials during a four-day community anti-drug raid at Assin Asaman and Owusukrom, leaving one person injured.

Chiefs from Assin Asaman, in the Central Region's Assin Central constituency, and from Owusukrom, across the border in Ashanti's Adansi South District, led the operation, Adom News reported.

The area's assembly member, Gregory Ankomah Gyakye, took part.

Over four days, the community task force pulled down several makeshift structures locally called "ghettos" that were allegedly used as hubs for selling and using narcotics across the two border towns.

Search teams also seized an unspecified amount of cash together with quantities of suspected cannabis, tramadol and cocaine during the sweep.

Youths connected to the demolished drug spots then hit back, attacking the chiefs, the assembly member and the people with them.

A member of the team was wounded with a cutlass, and the windscreen and side windows of Gyakye's vehicle were smashed. Gyakye said he and others in the team narrowly escaped being lynched.

Gyakye said drug sales had driven a rise in crime in the area. Elsewhere in the Assin area this week, police held a father and son at Assin Akrofuom after a man was allegedly tied to a pole and beaten.

"Some drug dealers and users in the area engage in robbery, burglary, and other acts of public disturbance, particularly after consuming these substances, thereby undermining peace and security in our communities," Gyakye said.

He added that traditional leaders and residents in Assin Asaman and Owusukrom remain determined to stop illegal drug operations from threatening local safety, at a time when police in the wider Assin area are also investigating the death of a 56-year-old farmer at Assin Ketukrom.

The three suspects are in police hands for investigation. The Ghana Police Service had not issued a statement on the case by Friday afternoon.
