He made the announcement at the 30th anniversary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the media industry.

The President said the allocation was intended to provide seed funding for the initiative, which he announced would be reactivated during last year's GJA Media Awards.

The fund is expected to support several areas, including journalists’ welfare, professional development, investigative reporting, digital literacy and safety training.

“I am pleased to announce that government has allocated in the 2027 budget GH¢10 million of seed money for the Media Fund,” President Mahama said.

Beyond the government’s contribution, he pledged to work with the GJA to secure additional funding from corporate institutions to ensure the initiative has the resources needed to achieve its objectives.

He specifically mentioned KGL and the Bank of Ghana among the institutions he intends to approach for support.

“I shall personally work with the GJA to get several other corporate institutions to contribute to the fund. So KGL, Bank of Ghana, all of you, we are coming to you to contribute to the Media Fund,” he said.

President Mahama assured journalists that the government would continue engaging the GJA and other stakeholders to translate the commitment into practical support, while respecting the editorial independence of the media.

He also called on senior media practitioners, particularly editors, to invest in mentoring young journalists by giving them opportunities to develop practical newsroom skills.

He said experienced journalists should help younger colleagues acquire skills in areas such as analysing public accounts and using the findings to produce stronger investigative reports.

“A young journalist who can sit with an editor and work through a set of public accounts will carry that skill into every story that follows,” he added.
