Seven companies are in the running to build the Keta Port, President John Dramani Mahama told the Anlo people on Saturday, as he also promised a 200-acre textile hub at Weta and GH¢250 million more for the Blekusu sea defence.

Speaking at the Hogbetsotso grand durbar in Anloga, he said the seven were picked from 47 firms that had bid to become the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority's (GPHA) strategic partners on the port.

“Due diligence has been conducted, and the list has been shortlisted to seven companies. These seven companies are proceeding to the next stage, which involves completing the designs and arranging the financing for the project to commence,” he told the gathering.

He added that the port's administration block, started under the previous government, is scheduled for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2027. “Government remains committed to advancing the project on a credible foundation,” Mahama said.

200-acre textile and garment hub at Weta

On industrial jobs in the Volta Region, the President said he had commissioned the Ghana Export-Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank) to begin developing a 200-acre light industrial enclave at Weta dedicated to textiles and garments.

“We have commissioned the Ghana EXIM Bank to commence work on a Light Industrial Area in the Weta area. Two hundred acres of land have been acquired,” he said.

“We expect that initially, when it starts, it will create some 3,000 jobs and grow eventually to 10,000 jobs when it is fully operational,” Mahama added.

The Weta enclave follows the commissioning in August 2026 of the Northshore Apparel Ghana factory at Savelugu in the Northern Region, a partnership backed by Ghana EXIM Bank, Germany's KfW Development Bank and the Agricultural Development Bank that currently employs more than 2,300 workers.

GH¢250m for Blekusu Phase Two and GH¢685m for WACA

Responding to appeals from Anlo traditional leaders over tidal erosion, Mahama said an additional GH¢250 million — reported as GH¢257 million by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation — has been allocated in the 2027 Budget to ensure uninterrupted work on the Blekusu Phase Two Coastal Protection Project.

“I have also heard your appeal for the uninterrupted continuation and completion of the Blekusu Phase Two Coastal Protection Project,” he said, adding that the budget allocation will fund its completion.

The four-year second phase is being built by Amandi Holding Limited across an eight-kilometre stretch covering Blekusu, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutsinu and Adina in Ketu South. It includes 37 groynes, reinforced embankments, dune restoration, a fish market and cold storage facilities.

Beyond Blekusu, Mahama announced GH¢685 million to start coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA), combining breakwaters, groynes, lagoon rehabilitation and livelihood support for women, youth and persons with disabilities. He urged chiefs and residents to protect mangroves and coastal vegetation.

Water, roads and market projects in the Volta Region

Mahama also said the stalled Sogakope–Agodome–Keta Water Project will resume after the government signed a memorandum of understanding with contractors in October to finish the first phase.

On roads, he said the Ho–Denu highway is due for completion in 2027, procurement is underway for the Miotso–Aflao stretch, a contractor is being sought for the Dabala–Savietula–Keta–Denu highway, and the Abor–Atiavi road is under the World Bank Feeder Roads Project.

He added that the Anloga 24-hour market is on track, land and designs are ready for a US$30 million Chinese-grant Aflao Ashigame market, and land has been inspected for a University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) School of Pharmacy.
